Odds and sods

  • I’m scheming up ways of making myself noticeable at SXSW 2008. While I did hear the suggestion to wear a patriotic banana hammock like Oilers prospect Rob Schremp, I’m thinking more along the lines of clever t-shirts.
  • Facebook is pure evil.
  • I just ran across my bio on MacEwan’s website while trying to find a colleague’s phone number. I’d forgotten my attempt to get an obscure reference into the official college ephemera.

Canadians (and the NHL draft) through American eyes

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007 0 Comments

Bill Simmons, the popular Sports Guy over at ESPN Page 2, stumbled upon the NHL entry draft on Friday and decided to live-blog it. I enjoy the Sports Guy’s humour, and it was an interesting experience to read his perspective on an event that I’d been looking forward to watching for a number of weeks. He was bemused and took a great deal of glee in the “Candianness” of the coverage. My perspective was different of course, as after I watched it, I felt sick, angry, and confused. Stupid Oilers.  Continue Reading…

Schwarzenegger: Language Master

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007 2 Comments

Okay. I was watching the first game of the Stanley Cup playoffs last night, and the intro featured a quick interview with Governor Schwarzenegger. As usual, he was articulate and charming, but one part of the interview stood out for me because of what he didn’t say:

Adobe CS3 Disables Mac OS X Firewall

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007 0 Comments

Courtesy of a post on MacSlash:

When you install Adobe Version Cue CS3 Server on Mac systems that have the Mac OS X personal firewall enabled, the installer turns off the firewall to correctly set up Version Cue Server but does not turn the firewall back on at the end. This creates a potential security vulnerability.

To fix this problem, you need to manually re-enable your firewall by opening “System Preferences” (under the blue apple menu), selecting “Sharing”, clicking “Firewall”, then clicking the “Start” button under “Firewall Off”.

Having just installed CS3 recently, I was pretty shocked to open up that preference pane and see that my firewall had been disabled. Shame on Adobe for opening up such a huge vulnerability, and shame on Apple for allowing the firewall to be disabled without any kind of notification to the user.

Update to Collapsing Page Menus Plugin!

Friday, May 18th, 2007 0 Comments

I’ve finally had the time to update the collapsing page menus plugin to handle WordPress 2.1 and greater. Matt and his team decided to change how pages were stored in the database, which broke a tonne of plugins, including mine. Come to think on it, I should have accosted him at SXSW about that, but he was too busy bragging about how a Google search for ‘matt’ will bring you to his bio as the first result.

I seem to have strayed from my original brief. The updated plugin still works with older versions of WordPress, so you’ve no fear of upgrading.

Anyway, updated plugin is available here.
